Satan’s Subtle Influences
1Co 5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Christ spoke of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is a negative influence on our spiritual lives.
Mt 16:12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
We need to remove this leaven from our spiritual homes, the temple of the Holy Spirit, in order to become pure as God desires us to be. This is so vital to God that He cut off anyone who didn’t rid themselves of it during the Days of Unleavened Bread.
Ex 12:19 Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eats that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.
This is a lesson we are reminded of during the Days of Unleavened Bread, and it is a lesson that should be brought into our everyday lives.
I have been looking into the process of making bread with wild yeast, obtained from the air around us as the ancient Israelites did. As we understand this process, we come upon a valuable lesson for our day.
Today, we can still use this method of making bread as a tool to remind us and to teach our children these vital principles during the year. We as women are stewards over God’s houses physically and spiritually and those he has entrusted to us.
“The ancients did not use yeast as we know it today. Since the days of ancient Egypt, 5000 or more years ago right up to the present, bakers have captured yeast that is continually in the air all around us.
It does not leaven until it has a host (breads or other grains). You can do this as well, right in your own kitchen.
- Mix a cup of flour (whole wheat or white) with a cup of lukewarm water in a small jar, and stir them together until they are smooth. Place the mixture on a shelf or windowsill and leave it uncovered so the yeast will be able to find food. Now wait and watch it change over the next several days.
- Stir that mixture each day with a wooden spoon or stick. After a few days, it will start to smell a little sour and become sticky. The mixture is fermenting – which is another way of saying that it has attracted invisible wild yeast which are feeding off the flour and water and changing everything in the process.
- After five to ten days, you will notice small bubbles in the mixture. This is that carbon dioxide which is a by-product of the reproduction of the yeast. Notice that the smell is more pleasant – almost like peaches. Give it another 5 days to build strength, stirring it daily and feeding it by adding a few tablespoons of flour and maybe a little water if it is too dry.
- You now have a cup of guess what? Sourdough starter that you can add to bread dough to make it rise.” * 1
The Bible says Satan is the prince of the power of the air (which I liken to the physical spores of yeast in the air all around us).
Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience.
If we understand that Satan’s influences are like the spores of yeast in the air, then we can avoid the leavening process.
The story below I found to be a good analogy of his influences, keeping us so busy that we don’t have time for study and prayer and drawing close to God that we need to stay unleavened. We need that precious time with God to personally teach us what we need to remove from our lives and what to put in its place.
Satan called a worldwide convention of demons. In his opening address he said,”We can’t keep Christians from going to church.” “We can’t keep them from reading their Bibles and knowing the truth.” “We can’t even keep them from forming an intimate relationship with their Savior.” “Once they gain that connection with Jesus, our power over them is broken.”
“So let them go to their churches; let them have their covered dish dinners, but steal their time, so they don’t have time to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ.” “This is what I want you to do”, said the devil:
“Distract them from gaining hold of their Savior and maintaining that vital connection throughout their day!” “How shall we do this?” his demons shouted.
“Keep them busy in the nonessentials of life and invent innumerable schemes to occupy their minds,” he answered.
“Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow.”
“Persuade the wives to go to work for long hours and the husbands to work 6-7 days each week, 10-12 hours a day, so they can afford their empty lifestyles.”
“Keep them from spending time with their children.” “As their families fragment, soon, their homes will offer no escape from the pressures of work!”
“Over-stimulate their minds so that they cannot hear that still, small voice.” “Entice them to play the radio or CD player whenever they drive.” “To keep the TV, VCR, CDs and their PCs going constantly in their home and see to it that every store and restaurant in the world plays non-biblical
music constantly.” “This will jam their minds and break that union with Christ.”
“Fill the coffee tables with magazines and newspapers.” “Pound their minds with the news 24 hours a day.” “Invade their driving moments with billboards.” “Flood their mail boxes with junk mail, mail order catalogs,
sweepstakes, and every kind of newsletter and promotional offering free products , services and false hopes.”
“Keep skinny, beautiful models on the magazines and TV so their husbands will believe that outward beauty is what’s important, and they’ll become dissatisfied with their wives.” “Keep the wives too tired to love their husbands at night.” “Give them headaches too!” “If they don’t give their
husbands the love they need, they will begin to look elsewhere.” “That will
fragment their families quickly!”
“Even in their recreation, let them be excessive.” “Have them return from their recreation exhausted.” “Keep them too busy to go out in nature and reflect on God’s creation.” “Send them to amusement parks, sporting events, plays, concerts, and movies instead.” “Keep them busy, busy, busy!”
“And when they meet for spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences.”
“Crowd their lives with so many good causes they have no time to seek power from Jesus.” “Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health and family for the good of the cause.” “It will work!”
“It will work!”
It was quite a plan! The demons went eagerly to their assignments, causing Christians everywhere to get busier and more rushed, going here and there, having little time for their God or their families, having no time to tell others about the power of God to change lives.
I guess the question is, has the devil been successful at his scheme?
You be the judge! Does “busy” mean:
Lu 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
Let’s not let the cares of this life (Satan’s leaven) take hold of us and keep us from the One who gives us life.
FOR TODAY: Let’s remember the lesson. As dough that is left out is leavened by the spores in the air, so our lives can be leavened by the subtle influences of the prince of the power of the air. We must be diligent and watch and keep ourselves unleavened, and God will greatly bless us and our families. We then can then enjoy the richness and peace of our personal relationship with God.
