…But It’s Just Fantasy

As Halloween approaches the newest of the dark side of entertainment appears.  The movies I pictured are old, but they depict what I want to discuss.  The newest movies now are filled with the latest in horror, violence, withcraft, sorcery, and now even love stories involving the dark side pervade. When I speak with Christian women, I find some that believe that the above is an acceptable form of entertainment.  Why? They say, “It’s just fantasy!” “After all, we know it is not true.”

To begin our discussion, let us first understand what fantasy is.

Wikipedia speaks of fantasy as follows:

1) Fantasy is a genre of fiction that commonly uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary element of plot, theme, or setting.

2) Fantasy is defined as unrestrained imagination.

Let’s look at the second definition today and the first on a later post.

Romans 1:21 “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

Romans 1:21 (DBY) “Because, knowing God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but fell into folly in their thoughts, and their heart without understanding was darkened.”

How does God view our thoughts and imaginations? Should they be in line with God’s word of truth?

2 Corinthians 10:4 “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.”

2 Corinthians 10:5 “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

We are not wrestling with men but with the “prince of the power of the air”.  Satan is waging a war to conquer our minds. If we are going to survive we need to be diligent and seek after what is good. We cannot afford to call evil good.

How does God view the presenting of something that is evil as good?

Isaiah 5:20 “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

Harry Potter promotes meditation, transfiguration into other beings or animals, fortune telling, reincarnation, occult spells, curses, vampires, and demons. 1

What does God’s word warn the Israelites when they entered the promised land:

“When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire [an ancient occult practice], or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination [detestable] to the LORD…”
—Deuteronomy 18:9-12a

Psalms 36:4 “He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.”

Should we be embracing such fantasy? God’s judgment on the peoples of Noah’s day stands as a stark reminder of His feelings on this matter.

Genesis 6:5-7 “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

“And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

“And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

We, as women of God, should take a hard look at what we entertain our minds with. The two part word… 1) enter- what enters our mind, and 2) -tain, what we retain in our minds…gives us a clue as to what we should do. We must watch carefully what we allow to enter and remain in our minds.

Here is a question we might want to ask ourselves.

Does the entertainment we view align with God’s word?

Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

We as women of God need to entertain our minds [our imaginations] with what is good in the sight of God.  The assault that the entertainment media is waging against our minds is real.

Let’s open our minds to the things of God and keep our minds pure, so that in the day of Christ’s coming, we will have no spot or wrinkle in our garments. We will have made ourselves ready to meet the Lord in the air in all pureness.

Wicca, divinition, sorcery. The occult is in the midst of society.  Many claim, TV and movies that portray witchcraft is just fantasy, but the occult is still alive in our society.  The Bible says to avoid and resist it.  See below an interview of a former witch.
